"There is no one day or 'golden rule' about when to book that applies to all travel," Hayley Berg, lead economist at Hopper, says. The booking app relies on eight years of data and 70 trillion flight prices to recommend the best time to book specific routes and dates.

"Most domestic trip airfare will fall between one and three months before your departure, before rising rapidly in the last three to four weeks before takeoff," Berg said. "This means there is a sweet spot where airlines will be offering lower prices on average and are more likely to offer promotional discounts and ultra-low fares."

Even though 2023 just started, now is the time to start booking your flights for both spring break and summer travel if you haven't already done so. Finding flight deals over popular travel dates requires planning five to six months in advance.

While there is no magical time or day of the week to book airfare for the best prices, your best bet is to fly midweek, specifically Wednesdays, for both domestic and international travel. Flying over the weekend usually comes at a significant price premium.

I'm a frequent contributor to the New York Times. I've written for the paper on everything from exclusives on new hotel openings such as the Crillon, in Paris, to breaking news travel stories like the immediate impact of hurricanes Maria and Irma on travel to the Caribbean. I also write for CNN.com, Bloomberg, Travel & Leisure and the New York Times Magazine. Contributing to Forbes.com is something of a homecoming for me: I was previously the site's full-time travel writer and am well versed in the world of luxury travel. I went to New York University's School of Journalism, but I believe that the best education for a travel writer is to...travel!

If you're planning to take the train on more than just a single roundtrip route, it may save you money in the long run to buy a train pass. Passes like the Eurail Pass in Europe and the JR Pass in Japan can get you unlimited rides on select routes for a set time period.

However, it notes that this may not apply to your specific destination.

The Airline Reporting Corporation (ARC) is the group that links all of the world's major airlines and all of the world's major travel agencies that sell tickets, so its data comes from hundreds of millions of airfare transactions. While last-minute flight bookings are not going to guarantee you the cheapest seats, you would be wise not to book your tickets too far in advance either. The sweet spot for booking your flight is the 6-week period before you aim to depart, as some airlines may have last-minute specials.

If you want to save money, which day of the week you book your flights matters. For example, for business travel dates, mid-week during a holiday period, or major trade shows, airfares tend to cost more as they are in greater demand. So, what day of the week are flights cheapest? According to Trip.com, the cheapest tickets are on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday. However, flight prices are affected by several factors, so remember to take a look at Trip.com's low-cost monthly calendar too. One thing to remember is that if you are traveling to a popular business travel destination, ticket prices will most likely hike on Mondays and Fridays as they are peak weekly business travel days. So instead, opt for Tuesday through Thursday for better deals.

For U.S. flights, this is the best time to book your flight. More specifically, Tuesday at about 15:00 eastern time. This is because many airlines release weekly sales early on Tuesday, which creates competition between airlines to match prices.
